About the Museum
The American Heritage Museum, part of the Collings Foundation, is under an hour’s drive from Boston. The museum became a reality when in 2013, the family of Jaques M. Littlefield donated a collection of tanks, armored vehicles, and military artifacts.
Exhibits and Collections
As you walk through the chronological exhibits, the story of American veterans and our military history comes to life right before your eyes. You will begin to appreciate our relationships with the British, French, German, and Russian friends, foes, and counterparts.
WWI Trench Experience
When you descend into the immersive WWI trench experience, you are instantly transported to the fighting grounds. In the dark trench you struggle to focus, as the battle rages around you, a medic narrates a daily page of WWI fighting.
D Day
The LCVP (landing craft, vehicle, personnel) or Higgins Boat on display brings the enormity of the Normandy battles into focus. The men who landed on the Normandy Beaches and survived were responsible for the battles that liberated France and other European nations.
Berlin Wall
The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 opened the door for the people of East Berlin. A piece of this infamous German wall stands as a reminder of the Cold War tensions.
Hanoi Hilton
Step inside the Hanoi Hilton (Hoa Lo Prison) and learn the excruciating stories of the men brought to this prison. Their daily routine and regular torturous beatings are difficult to imagine as you absorb the enormity of their mission just to stay alive. These men had nerves of steel to face their day-to-day existence.
Air Shows And Exhibitions
More than a simple military museum, the American Heritage Museum offers events like re-enactments, tank demonstrations, historic aircraft exhibitions, speaker series, aviation weekend, and more. Visit the events page for a complete list of upcoming features.
Drive A Tank
Have you ever wanted to drive a real tank? The American Heritage Museum offers guests an immersive experience driving (or riding in) a World War II tank. The tank driving collection consists of the M4A3 Sherman Medium Tank, the M24 Chaffee Light Tank, and the M36 Jackson Tank Destroyer.
Starting in April and running through October, you can register to take the helm of one of these beastly vehicles. Let the armored vehicles fun begin.
Restoration and Preservation Efforts
A restoration workroom at the museum houses vehicles and equipment in need of restoration. Volunteers and staff diligently work on the preservation of pieces that may eventually be on public display. With modern technology and traditional tooling, the restoration and preservation allows the museum to display pristine vehicles and artifacts.
The American Heritage Museum does take artifacts as donations, however they take into account certain criteria. A Donation Inquiry Form must be completed to assess the viability of the donated artifacts.
